Members
of Metacomet VFW Post 1926, Simsbury, announce ceremony plans for Veterans Day,
November 11 and month-long clothing drive
Simsbury’s Metacomet Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 1926 announces the ceremony for Veterans Day, Sunday,
November 11, 2018. All military veterans
and their families are warmly invited to attend.
On Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, the public is invited to
the annual Simsbury Veterans Day Ceremony beginning with a moment of silence at
exactly 11:00am. It will take place at
Eno Memorial Hall, 754 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury. The doors will open to the
public at 10:30am for seating in the main auditorium. The event is organized
every year by members of the VFW Post 1926 and American Legion Post 84,
Simsbury. Mr. Len Lanza, a member of both the VFW and American Legion, will be
master of ceremonies. After the moment of silence, a welcome will be given by
First Selectman Eric Wellman. He will be
followed by a presentation of colors, placement of a POW-MIA flag, patriotic
music, remarks by various veterans and more. A reception in the atrium will
follow the event.
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was founded in
honor of the signing of the agreement to end the fighting along the western
front during WWI. The signing of the
agreement occurred in Paris on November 11, 1918 at 11:00a.m. Traditionally
Veterans Day is a time to thank current veterans and remember those who have
gone before as patriots for our freedom.
From November 11 through
December 11, the Post will hold their annual clothing drive for
veterans in need at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Home in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
Donated items will be used as holiday gifts so all clothing items are to be new,
in original packaging with tags and unwrapped. Clothing most needed for men and
women are sweaters, coats, slippers, sweat pants and sweatshirts, gloves,
socks, etc. Sizes needed are from Medium to 4XL. Also requested are personal
items such as body wash, shampoo and conditioners, powders, lotions, deodorant,
batteries, postage stamps and gift cards for music. All drop off location boxes will be at sites
along Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury: CVS Pharmacy, Simsbury Fire Department main
station, Eno Memorial Hall main floor, Simsbury Public Library and outside the
police station dispatch office inside Town Hall. All donations are tax
deductible. Monetary donations can be sent to: Simsbury Metacomet VFW Post 1926, P.O. Box 211, Simsbury, CT 06070. Please indicate: "Rocky Hill Veterans’ Home
Holiday 2018” in the memo line of the check.
In addition, during November members of the Post will visit
various Simsbury schools to speak to students about their service experiences.
Including are discussions of military culture, background about the conflict,
and life in the various branches of services and benefits gained from military
service. There is always opportunity for students to question the veterans.
Venue is often in the classroom or in assembly.
